$5,000,000 Lottery Win is “Enough” for the Whole Family

Sixty-four-year-old Michael Rowinski prides himself on being a dedicated family man.  So dedicated that he didn’t think twice about sharing the $5,000,000 minimum prize he won on the Lottery’s Set For Life instant ticket with his entire family.  The Con Edison retiree said it was an easy decision.

“I’ve always tried to help out my family over the years anyway I could,” said Rowinski, a father of two.  “So when I hit the jackpot I knew exactly what to do with the prize money.  This isn’t just my win, it’s a win for the entire family.”

Rowinski purchased his $10 Set For Life ticket on July 3rd at Marco’s Vino & Spirits on Westbrook Drive in Cortandt Manor.  He claimed the ticket with his family at the Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Fishkill on July 13th.

“My wife and I had a planned vacation starting the day after I bought the ticket so I locked it up in a safety deposit box while we were gone.  As soon as we got back I rounded up the family and we drove to Fishkill to claim it.”

The top prize on the Set For Life ticket guarantees a minimum payout of $5,000,000 to be paid over 20 years. The individual members of the Rowinski family will each receive a share of the $250,000 annuitized prize (net $165,072).  Individual family members will continue to receive their respective share of the prize even after the $5,000,000 minimum has been met, for life.

“None of us really have any set plans for the money.  We’re all just very thankful for the win and will be sure to make good decisions on how we spend it,” said Rowinski.

The Rowinskis are the third Westchester County group or individual to claim a Lottery prize of $1,000,000 or more in 2011.  In March, Juan Carlos Gonzalez of Port Chester won $1,000,000 on the Mega Millions instant ticket. In June, James Dilworth of White Plains won $1,000,000 on the Match & Win instant ticket.

The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing over $3 billion in fiscal year 2010-2011 to help support education in New York State.  The Lottery’s aid represents over 15 percent of total state education funding to local school districts.

Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education.  It takes into account both a school district’s size and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.
